Santa Fe. Dear Dear Dear Dear Dear Santa Fe.

I guess Monday night is just as good a night as any night to get drunk and play out of tune Bob Dylan songs by myself in my room.

It is getting darker earlier. Pretty soon, I will get to work and the sun will not be over the east bay and I will be robbed of scenes like this.

sweet tooth nelson from spencer keeton cunningham on Vimeo.

Spencer Keeton Cunningham made a beautiful short movie about my friend, Brett .

(You can get his music here.)

I get down while trying to balance working hard all the time and not doing anything. I am learning to not let my money-making job become a weight to my mood, and my satisfaction is coming from the amount of work I am doing for myself. And I am lucky enough to say I don't have to look to billboards or literature for inspiration. I let my friends' accomplishments help with that.

We all should earn our life in some way or another.

During my first week of work, I had to drive to the set to get some work-related documents signed. It turns out that set was about 40 miles away in the hills somewhere north of San Francisco. On the way back, I decided to pull over and quickly take two pictures - one in each direction - from the side of the road. California mountains are different than upstate South Carolina mountains. Neither is necessarily prettier, but these are so new to me.

I hate math. But I love numbers. Which makes my accounting clerk job perfect, because I pretty much just have to count all day. In my down time, I have spent a lot of time budgeting for myself. By coming up with a savings cycle based on my weekly income that allows me to cover rent, utilities and a small weekly allowance for food, I am able to stash away money "for the future" while simultaneously saving for the things that I want/the adventures that make 60 hour work weeks worth while. I think it's pretty genius.

The first item on my "things that I want" checklist was a USB drawing tablet. I've started putting some miles on it by working on some new animations. But the first thing I did was draw this (with some help from Adrienne).

I shot a roll of film this weekend, but due to my work schedule cannot get it developed until Saturday.

Until then, I'll try to think of other things to display until I have a selection of adventure shots. Or just go look at movies I made awhile ago on vimeo: http://www.vimeo.com/user1846860/videos

I have been day dreaming a lot lately because my night dreams are weird. Two nights ago, Gary Busey punched and broke my guitar at a Steve Malkmus and the Jicks show. I woke up after I hit him with my guitar.

Saturday: in-store Jay Reatard show at Amoeba Records. Sunday: Hiked to Almere Falls at Point Reyes National Seashore. Now I am back to a week filled with Microsoft Excel, numbers, coffee, and day dreaming about future adventures.

master of none

I recently thought about how people usually excel in something when they put all of their efforts into it. "Jack of all trades, master of none." That's how I feel. My whole life has been spent jumping between drawing, photography, music, video, skateboarding, etc and in order to "master" something, I will need to narrow it down.

After lots of thinking, I was able to narrow it down to drawing, photography, music and video. Mainly because my kickflips are garbage.

So this is it: my farewell to the dream twelve years in the making. At 26 years old, I accept the fact that I will never become a professional skateboarder.

My favorite part about jogging in San Francisco is that it is like a real life treadmill. At every intersection I have different resistance options. Today I chose to run down a big hill, run up a big hill, then run on a fairly consistent flat surface for awhile.

Treasure Island is an artificial island, created between 1936 and 1937. During World War II, it became a Naval Base. It was decommissioned in 1996, but is still owned by the Navy.

Five days a week, I leave the fog of the Sunset, cross half of the bay bridge and sit at a desk on the second floor of a Treasure Island office building. Before walking inside, the towering flag (above) is the last thing I see. After ten and a half hours of spread sheets and purchase orders, I leave. The skyline (below) is the first thing I see.
